Graphic Design & Illustration

From a very young age I was drawing, painting and crafting any chance I got, and with any materials at hand. I joke that I was born with the “Make and Do” gene. With inspiration ranging from Disney and Dr. Seuss to Louise Fili, Hayao Miyazaki and a myriad of other artists, I’ve been happiest exploring and creating art, especially in illustration and design. My first major in college was Interior Design. Although I loved it, I gave it up, doubting that art could support a living wage. Instead I graduated in physical therapy and worked a fulfilling career helping people in that field for many years. But over time, the artistic part of me persisted. My perspective changed. I now believe that with the right skills, art and design can pay the bills too. My parents and grandparents before them were teachers, and creative artists. I like to think I’m basically returning to my true nature and vocation.

Sculpey App Design

Sculpey wished to increase interest in their brand by creating a new App to appeal to their target audience’s enthusiasm for crafting. Using digital functionality of the phone, the App was designed to engage users in interacting with the product by simulating the experience of molding Sculpey’s polymer modeling clay. Users swipe the screen to “stretch” the clay, move a finger in a circling motion onscreen to create a clay “ball” and so on, to make a creation of their choosing. When the creation is complete, users earn a coupon for discounted prices on Sculpey products. The App can also be used to locate a Craft Store and sign up for a Craft Class there of any kind. Upon completion of the first class, the consumer earns a coupon for a FREE Sculpey product.

Dawn Ad Campaign

Introduced by Procter & Gamble in 1973, Dawn has a reputation for removing grease from dishes. With the Amoco Cadiz oil spill in 1978, Dawn was also discovered to be the best product to remove oil from affected wildlife without harming the animals. Intended to communicate intelligence, strength, and gentleness, this multi-media ad campaign plays up Dawn's versatility and environmentally friendly persona to target Millennial consumers by appealing to this generation's Eco-consciousness. Striking lighting and color effects draw the viewer in, and to further engage consumers, call outs with social media links encourage them to connect with other wildlife enthusiasts and contribute to International Bird Rescue and The Marine Mammal Center.

Milwaukee County Zoo Website

To give the Milwaukee County Zoo website a fun new look, images of the animals were rendered in watercolor style, and featured throughout the homepage as if popping in from the sides of the screen. Hand-painted watercolor images simulating jungle foliage create a background atmosphere of nature, adventure, and wonder. Viewers are drawn into the page and encouraged through the use of specific graphics and call-outs to navigate the site further to find basic information such as hours, admission, and parking, as well as daily activities, special events and an area to browse images of many of the zoo’s over 3,100 mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles.

San Francisco Travel Article

This article grew out of a previous project illustrating a city map depicting sightseeing attractions, buildings, and natural landmarks. I chose San Francisco, a city I’ve always wanted to visit. Highlights include the Golden Gate bridge, China Town, various museums, parks, and neighborhoods like the Castro and the Presidio, perched atop some very steep hills. My drawings “lay out” the city, I then maneuvered text to lay-out a magazine article about travel there. Hopefully I’ve conveyed some of the sentiment in this quote by Patrick Geddes, “A city is more than a place in space, it is a drama in time”.
